Common DNS Issues in VPN Networking . DNS issues comprise a major portion of connectivity problems related to ISA Server 2000 firewalls and VPN servers. ISA Server firewall/VPN servers and clients use DNS host name resolution to resolve both internal and external network names. The obvious solution here is to choose a DNS server that works, or, to make sure that there is no firewall standing in the way, blocking the queries from the VPN clients to the DNS server. In some cases, when routing is used to give VPN clients access to servers on the private network behind the Access Server, it is a matter of a missing route. Re: VPN possible DNS issues? At the home computer, when you type ipconfig /all does the MX come up as the DNS server or does your DNS server on the other side of the VPN come up? if you manually type in the DNS server in the DNS section of your network adapter's IP properties are you able to resolve hostnames? Dec 15, 2019 · Re: DNS issues in Site-to-Site Auto-VPN Ulitmately the issue was a datacenter routing problem. Our impacted clients could not reach a Network Location Service and tried to activate DirectAccess (IPv6) over the site-to-site VPN.
Jan 02, 2020 · Google Public DNS. Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8 Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4 Of course, Google was going to be the number one pick on the list of free DNS servers. Google Public DNS was started in 2009 and has enabled millions of internet goers to enjoy a great online experience. Using the vpn setup in this way, all of my clients traffic gets routed through the VPN, which is great. If I trace route from the pfsense to some IP I can see that my pfSense traffic is also being routed through the VPN: fantastic. The only problem is that the DNS Resolver does not work. Not sure what you mean. This is initial beginning with the VPN so I have no history of DNS working through the VPN in the past. If you mean 'without the VPN being 'on,' then yes, it works fine connected to the "coffee house" public wifi (or anybody else's), and connected to home wifi. However if we run a simultaneous pcap on the VPN gateway firewall it never sees the DNS query for that DNS server. How come I am seeing the IP of the DNS server respond on the client pcap but it never get grabbed on the pcap via the firewall? We push down a 0.0.0.0/0 route so routing shouldn't be my issue.
Our VPN does not do IPv6 but my understanding is any IPv6 resolver will take precedent over IPv4 ones. Once we disabled IPv6 on the adapters then adjusted the metrics split-tunnel DNS resumed working. If your VPN supports IPv6 this is likely not needed and if the metric adjustment by itself fixes DNS for you keep IPv6 enabled on your adapter.
If that doesn't help, try changing the DNS servers you are using when connected to the VPN. To do so, simply: Navigate to the Settings (cog icon) of the NordVPN application. Click Advanced. Enable Custom DNS settings. Click Set DNS server address, enter 8.8.8.8; Click Set DNS server address again, and enter 8.8.4.4; Afterward, try to connect again.
